Independent Owner Operators Insurance Recommendations
If you're a independent truck owner operator, you need special owner operator insurance products and features to keep you fully protected under any and all circumstances. Progressive understands the needs of independent truck owner operators and can help you find the coverage that suits you.
Independent Owner Operator Insurance
As an independent owner operator leased to a carrier, your employer provides the majority of your insurance. However, you may need to purchase your own insurance for when you drive your truck on your own time.
While some employers may offer to provide these additional insurance coverages for you, you can often get a better deal by purchasing this insurance for yourself. Plus, you'll know exactly how much protection you're getting.

Recommended Coverages for Truck Owner Operators
It's important to note that general commercial auto insurance doesn't cover you when you're deadheading, or driving off dispatch. Owner operator insurance does cover you — these insurance coverages are designed to protect you when you're driving your truck for a personal reason, such as helping a friend move on the weekend.
Non-Trucking Liability insurance – This independent owner operator insurance feature pays for damage to other people and their property for accidents you cause when you are driving your truck for personal use. Typically, your Primary Liability insurance does not protect you in these situations.
Physical Damage insurance – Pays for repairs to your vehicle if it's damaged in an accident, whether it's caused by a collision with another vehicle or a falling tree branch. Additional truck owner operator insurance options include:
You may also want full insurance coverage in case you switch motor carriers. Visit the Coverages and Service section for a full list of all of our available insurance coverages.
Radius of Operations Limitations
Progressive has a radius of operation restriction of 300 or 500 miles, depending on your state. This restriction helps us provide superior products and services for regional and local truck owner operators.
This restriction does not apply to Physical Damage insurance and Non-Trucking Liability insurance.
Keep in mind that we calculate our radius of operations as the crow flies instead of in road miles, so 300 miles can actually cover a fairly large area.
Example
If your business is headquartered in Buffalo, N.Y., a 300-mile radius allows you to drive to Cleveland, Detroit, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., and everywhere in between.
If your state offers a 500-mile radius, you can travel even farther.
